Waikiki Parc Hotel, Chris and Penny are on their way!

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Just two days now until Chris and I head off to the Waikiki Parc Hotel for our swimming holiday in Hawaii.

Our friends Val and Maddy are looking forward to their home away from home, minding our house and dogs while we’re away, and Chris and I are very much looking forward our stay at the Waikiki Parc Hotel. Waikiki Parc Hotel http://www.waikikiparc.com/

Our plan is that Chris and I each choose a channel we’d like to swim each then we do a fun little channel swim together.

This report by Diane Ako of the Waikiki Parc Hotel tells us more.. http://palfreymarathonswims.com/2011/01/penny-and-chris-palfrey-are-headed-back-to-hawaii-and-the-waikiki-parc-hotel/

Bridging the Cayman Islands Swim – update 5 – Chris Palfrey

Our regular readers will know this already of course, however for our newer readers Chris is my (Penny’s) husband and will be travelling with me to the Cayman Islands. Penny and Chris Palfrey, Kauai, Hawaii 2010

Chris will be on the escort boat throughout my swim as a member of the swim support team along with Steven Munatones, Dan Boyle, Jeff Kozlovich and Richard Clifford.

Chris will be an important member of my team, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his own channel swims and crewing for me during several of my previous marathon swims. Chris will also be assisting me in the lead up to my Bridging the Cayman Islands swim as we study and research the local ocean currents and weather.

You can read more about Chris’ previous marathon swimming experience on the ‘About Us’ page of this website http://palfreymarathonswims.com/about-us/ a few of the better know marathon swims which Chris has completed are; Chris - Lake Taupo NZ 2009 The Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, The Catalina Channel, Tampa Bay marathon swim, The Strait of Gibraltar, The Molokai Channel as well as many other swims in various parts the world. Chris has assisted me during my Alenuihaha Channel swim in Hawaii from Big Island to Maui, my San Miguell Island to mainland California swim in September 2008 and will be on my boat during my upcoming Molokai Channel, attempt in Hawaii next month.  Penny & Chris Sydney 2008

I know Chris is very excited about our visit to The Cayman Islands and is very supportive of my attempt to Bridge the Cayman Islands. Chris and I have been invited to participate in the 19th annual Flowers Sea Swim on June 18th which we are very much looking forward to. http://www.flowersseaswim.com/

Bridging the Cayman Islands Swim – update 4 – Lexie Kelly

Continuing from my last post on February 18th today’s support team member’s profile is Lexie Kelly.

Whilst Lexie won’t be on board the support boat during my swim, Lexie has an important supporting role in the lead up to The Flowers Sea Swim and my Bridging the Cayman Islands swim in June.  Lexie will travel to the Cayman Islands a month before the two swims and assist in the organisational side of things.

I asked Lexie a few questions about herself and her thoughts about her role in supporting the Flowers Sea Swim and the Bridging the Cayman Islands swim. Here’s what Lexie had to say;

“I’m 24 years old and come from Long Beach, California. I swam club growing up, 4 years at the Division I & II college level for California State University, Bakersfield, currently still a US Masters swimmer. I swim every day and love to live a healthy lifestyle. I am extremely passionate about swimming/open water swimming and am so excited to be a part of the team! I am currently helping Steve Coach Dwyer Middle School Swim Club in Huntington Beach, CA. I am employed by Orange County Lifeguards and work at various California beaches in the summer”.  Lexie Kelly

“I have swam on a team since age 8 (Redding Swim Team in Northern California) and continue to incorporate it into my daily routines. I am a certified beach lifeguard (Orange County Lifeguards). I have been involved with crews for Catalina Channel Swims and plan to do a crossing myself summer/fall of 2011. I participate in many open water events”.

“Being involved with Penny’s swim and the Flowers Sea swim is the opportunity of a lifetime for me! I am so incredibly thrilled to be a part of the events especially in such a beautiful location and wonderful team members!”

“I will be living in Grand Cayman for 8 – 12 weeks prior to the Flower’s Sea Swim helping plan and organize Penny’s marathon swim and the Flower’s Sea Swim”.

Wow! That sounds like a fabulous opportunity Lexie, thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Best wishes for all that you do in the Cayman Islands and for your Catalina Channel swim later this season. I’m very much looking forward to getting together for a few training swims once Chris and I arrive in the Cayman Islands on June 3rd!

Bridging the Cayman Islands – update 2 from Penny

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

With only four months until my Bridging the Cayman Islands Swim, there’s been lots of planning and behind the scenes organising. Mr Flowers and his team have been extremely busy in the Cayman Islands as we put the Bridge Swim together between Australia, the USA and the Cayman Islands via the internet.

There are boats, flights, accommodation, kayaks, paddleboards, crew and many other details to work through long before a swim like this can take place. We have a wonderful team of sponsors and Mr Flowers is going out of his way to ensure my swim is as safe as possible.

I have a swim crew of five extremely experienced men to support me during my swim, three will be boat support crew and two are water crew who will escort me throughout the swim in kayaks or on a paddleboard.

The boat support crew are, Steven Munatones of California, Chris Palfrey from Australia, Dan Boyle from New York, and the water support crew are Jeff Kozlovich, Hawaii and Richard Clifford also from New York.

Over the coming weeks I’ll be profile each member of the swim support crew and post here to our website. So keep checking in for updates on our upcoming channel swims in Hawaii during March and the latest goss on the Bridging the Cayman Islands swim.

Feeling a little chilly? That northern hemisphere winter starting to wear a little thin? Feel like a swim in beautiful warm tropical waters, just one mile….not too far at the beginning of summer? Then the Flowers Sea Swim could be just the thing for you http://www.flowersseaswim.com/
