Ancient Hawaiian folklore states that Kaʻena Point is the jumping-off point for souls leaving this world.

As mentioned in my last post I’ve been concentrating on the beginning of my Oahu to Kauai Islands swim.

I like to break my swims into various stages and concentrate on making sure that as many things are considered and discussed as possible in advance.

It’s very handy having Jeff Kozlovich and Bill Goding on my crew since their local knowledge is invaluable, as are some points raised by Steven Munatones who also resided in Hawaii during earlier years.

I like to visualise as much of the swim as I can in advance and prepare myself for some of the things that I may encounter.

One of the questions raised during our discussions was how many extra miles am I prepared to swim for a “safe start”, a perfectly valid question of course, but in my head there’s a little voice which piped up saying “what is 72 miles not enough already”?

Below is another great report by Steven Munatones,

  1. Hi Penny. Good luck for your absolutely incredibly brave swim. This is indeed one of the most hard core swims of all time. Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama paddle boarded the channel a few years ago. I found a great account of their experience here http://www.scottmortensen.com/PathofPurpose.pdf

Good luck from all the swimmers at the Kouga Swim Club in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa

Thank you Brenton and all the swimmers at the Kouga Swimming Club in Jeffereys Bay, South Africa.

Yes what a great account or Laird Hamilton and Dave kalama’s paddle board crossing in 2006.

  4. I’m looking for the place on Kauai ancient Hawaiians thought souls came back to after too many hours in the Kaieiewaho Channel. I’ll try to steer you to that spot.

  5. Penny says:

Thanks Jeff, I’ll probably be feeling like a very OLD soul by then.
