Hello dp,
I understand that permits are required for swimming in the rivers around Manhattan Island.
The water quality varies depending on recent rain falls, I beleive.
The person to contact about both water quality and permits would be Morty Berger at www.nycswim.org
Hope this helps - Penny

Do you think the water quality of the east river is safe enough to have regular swimming workouts in it?

What about just toweling off and making it home before a shower, would that pose a health concern?

You are an inspiration to me! I have my first ocean race in two weeks. I have trained all winter at the Y and worked through pain and frustration to get to this point. Our race is designed to go with the current and we are in a protected part of Buzzards Bay in New Bedford, MA. Our water is still only 62 degrees and many first-time swimmers are worried about how to prepare and if we can even do it. It's just a little race, 1.2 miles, but we've really looking forward to it. It's a fundraiser to keep our bay clean. If it isn't possible on race day I will think of you and know that I will try again, just like you. I know you will swim around Manhattan one day, oh and have a celebratory Sabretts chili dog for me.

Swim, baby, swim!

Regards,
Genny

HI Penny,
WELL DONE IN ANY CASE. IT REMINDS ME OF THE TIMES I USED TO SPEND SWIMMING AGAINST THE 7 KNOT CURRENT ON THE SEA FRONT AT THORPE BAY AS WELL AS THE CURRENT COMING TOWARD SHORE ON THE FRENCH SIDE OF THE CHANNEL. I HOPE, HAVING SWUM ONCE , WANTING TO SWIM AGAIN , THAT THE NEW TEAM CAN FIGURE OUT A BETTER TIME TO SWIM.

ALL OUR LOVE

Dear Penny,

You have inspired me, and I thank you for that. I am in awe by your perserverance in this task, and proud to be your FB friend. I'm so sorry the currents were as they were...but some things are just out of our hands...just like swimming the channel, some preparations can be the best, but the channel wins.

I wrote on a piece of paper that I'd put away and found last night "failure is just success turned inside out" and it makes sense to me. I know that you'll do this again, that you'll be even more prepared with your crew, and that you'll have a wonderful swim. And then, eventually, it will be time again for your little rubber ducky and crushed grapes.

I just wanted you to know that I'm pulling for you!!!! You ROCK, girl!!!
