Townsville swimmers Penny and Chris Palfrey to swim across Hawaii

NATALIE PEUT

HUSBAND and wife Penny and Chris Palfrey will again hit the open water over the next two weeks, this time swimming between the Hawaiian islands.

Final details are still to be confirmed, as weather will play a major part in their plans, but Chris said he hoped to swim 33km from the western side of Maui to Molokai and then south to Lanai. Only one person has ever completed the swim, and that was in 1989. Chris hoped he could set a new record.

“If I do it, it will be a pretty decent swim,” Chris said. “The conditions play such a big part in this sport and it really depends on the weather as to what swim we’ll do.”

Penny has set herself the challenge of swimming a 52km course.

“Penny’s should take about 21 hours, she’s hoping for less than that but, again, it will depend on the weather,” Chris said.

“It’s going to be very challenging for her. We’ve just got to get our heads around swimming at night.

“We have to be mentally ready for it _ we’ve been training well.”

The hazards include sharks and jellyfish.

“The bluebottles are our main concern because they float in the water, so we’ll just have to be careful of that,” Chris said.

The Palfreys are expected to return to Townsville on March 24.

A spanner in the works!

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

As Chris and I drove to the pool for training at 5am on Friday morning we listend to the local news and learned of a cyclone off the coast to the north of us.

Throughout  my swim I was thinking i hope that cyclone doesn’t come to Townsville on Sunday. We were due to fly to Brisbane, Sydney and on to Hawaii. After a brief discussion Chris and i decide to see if we could bring our flight to Brisbane forward a day to Saturday, concerned that the Townsville airport may be closed by Sunday.

Fortunately the change of flights was fairly easy, then we needed to book accommodation in Brisbane and get moving with our last minute preparations, including preparing our home for the cyclone threat made for a busy time.

As we now sit in Brisbane airport on Sunday arvo (afternoon) waiting for our flight to Sydney we are watching the news reports with much concern for our fellow Queenslanders as cyclone Hamish is now a category 5, (the strongest on a scale of 1-5) tracks down the Queensland coast.

We will be fortunate by flying out of Brisbane this aftenoon while many communities are being evacuated along the coast and Queensland braces for its strongest cyclone in many years. We hope the damage is not too great and everyone stays safe.

Only one week until Penny and Chris depart for Hawaii.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Shark Shield  for their continued support and GuSposts for coming on board with us to assist in our nutritional requirements during our marathon Channel swims.
