As Chris and I drove to the pool for training at 5am on Friday morning we listend to the local news and learned of a cyclone off the coast to the north of us.
Throughout my swim I was thinking i hope that cyclone doesn’t come to Townsville on Sunday. We were due to fly to Brisbane, Sydney and on to Hawaii. After a brief discussion Chris and i decide to see if we could bring our flight to Brisbane forward a day to Saturday, concerned that the Townsville airport may be closed by Sunday.
Fortunately the change of flights was fairly easy, then we needed to book accommodation in Brisbane and get moving with our last minute preparations, including preparing our home for the cyclone threat made for a busy time.
As we now sit in Brisbane airport on Sunday arvo (afternoon) waiting for our flight to Sydney we are watching the news reports with much concern for our fellow Queenslanders as cyclone Hamish is now a category 5, (the strongest on a scale of 1-5) tracks down the Queensland coast.
We will be fortunate by flying out of Brisbane this aftenoon while many communities are being evacuated along the coast and Queensland braces for its strongest cyclone in many years. We hope the damage is not too great and everyone stays safe.
